Filipa Pimentel
From a simple thrown mug to an intricately built vase, I have always been interested in combining the functional and sculptural possibilities of ceramics. For me, function adds another level of appreciation for the handmade object; where its use and its beauty are valued simultaneously.
The inspiration for my work comes from the ocean, mainly coral reef formations and various underwater sea creatures. I am fascinated by how different coral species cluster together to form beautiful, and often colourful, coral colonies. I also try to capture the gliding movement of a sea creature on the ocean floor through the positioning of the handle and feet on the body of my pieces. The tentacles mean something different to each person, from a sea anemone to a jellyfish to an octopus. There is no right answer for which creature the tentacles belong to; their purpose is to create movement and the idea that the cup is about to run off the table and back into the ocean.
My interest in the seascape of coral reefs brings together my love of sculptural form while maintaining my commitment to make functional work. My work does not duplicate what already exists in nature; it is a starting point for my imagination.
The underwater world provides me with an unlimited amount of inspiration for form, texture and colour.
